About us

Responding to the challenges of climate change mitigation, the Competence Centre for Climate and Energy offers cutting-edge technical advice for promoting renewable energy, energy efficiency, and Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+). Since 2000, GFA has provided consultancy services to private enterprises and governments in developing and emerging countries, including:

  • Advising design and implementation of national climate change and energy strategies, sectoral / technology roadmaps;
  • Designing sectoral climate change / energy programs (e.g. Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions) to support countries’ ambitions for climate change mitigation, including Nationally Determined Contributions;
  • Advice on financing renewable energy / energy efficiency projects and funding national / sectoral programs;
  • Supporting the design and implementation of Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) plans including  including MRV of
    a) GHG emissions,
    b) mitigation actions and
    c) the MRV of support as well as effective standard operating procedures and quality assurance / quality contol procedures.
    Designing and implementing REDD+ programs and financing strategies, designing mitigation activities, establishing Forest Reference Emission Levels while applying in-depth knowledge of the Forest Climate Partnership Facility (FCPF) and the Verified Carbon Standard procedures and requirements.

Joachim Schnurr

Mr Schnurr is director of the Competence Centre for Climate and Energy at GFA Consulting Group. In this function he manages projects and coordinates the company’s activities in the climate and energy sectors. During his professional career, he has dealt extensively with emission reduction activities in a number of sectors focusing on renewable energy, energy efficiency, and forestry projects. Since 2001 he has developed renewable energy and carbon financing solutions and established contacts to the private sector and political institutions. He has assisted German export initiatives for renewable energy and energy efficiency technology regarding financing opportunities, and supported implementation of renewable energy financing facilities in South Africa, Russia and Turkey. His consultancy activities also include providing policy advice on climate and energy-related issues to governments and private entities.

As a tropical forestry expert for over 25 years in Europe, Latin America, Africa and Asia,  he has experience planning, operating and evaluating technical and financial co-operation projects dealing with climate change, energy and natural resource management as short-term expert, project manager and long-term resource person for professional backstopping. Mr. Schnurr has deep knowledge of the modalities and requirements of international donor agencies and international financing institutions in project management.
                                                                                                                                                                                       

Martin Burian
Being an economist by training, Mr. Burian has been engaged in energy and climate-change issues since 2004. He has in-depth knowledge of the design and modeling of energy / climate policies. Mr Burian offers outstanding conceptual capacities and quantitative skills combined with a broad technical understanding of various low-carbon technologies.

Throughout his career, Mr Burian has advised and supported governments in their low carbon development efforts by designing carbon mitigation activities. He advised the Ministry of Economic Development of the Russian Federation by designing marginal abatement cost functions for key GHG sectors. Additionally, he advised on the design of emission trading schemes and developed levelized electricity costs models for various technologies. On behalf of the German Ministry for the Environment, he evaluated renewable energy potential, investment needs, and the mitigation potential of several renewable energy technologies for 12 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. Since 2013, Mr Burian has been supporting the DRC government in designing its FCPF program, including an investment and financing plan.
