Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)

The FSC is an international as well as government-independent organisation and is renowned on a world-wide basis. Its goal is the sustainable development of forests by promoting environmentally friendly, socially compatible and economically viable management.

The FSC is used by interest groups of various sectors, such as forest owners, the wood industry, nature protection organisations, groups for the protection of indigenous cultures, trade unions and many more.

The certification is not carried out by the FSC alone, but by accredited (certified) certification companies such as GFA. These are authorised to examine forest enterprises as well as wood trade and wood working enterprises and to issue FSC certificates. The certification companies are controlled and monitored by the FSC to allow for compliance to the FSC certification requirements.

Further information on the FSC:

A FSC database can be found in the Internet, in which a search according to FSC certified companies and products can be undertaken. Furthermore, the database can be used to check the validity of FSC certificates.
