Private Sector Development

The private sector is the engine of economic growth and  poverty reduction. Private sector development is a complex task, and its success depends on an effective combination of interven-tion at different levels. To cope with this challenge, GFA works towards achieving international competitiveness and designing intervention programmes that impact on poor communities.

The establishment of a favourable legal and regulatory environment is a prerequisite for sustainable enterprise growth. However, admin-istrative costs put an unequal burden on micro, small and medium-sized enterprises. GFA Consulting Group offers an array of instruments and tools to alert policy-makers to the needs of the private sector and the impact of economic policy, and to boost efficiency in government dealings with the private sector.

Private sector institutions are necessary to strengthen business' voice, and qualified business service providers are needed to make sure businesses grow. GFA builds capacity in pre-selected business support and lobby organ-isations parallel to developing demand-driven, largely unsubsidised business services and training markets. GFA supports this approach by using "Virtual Market", an Internet-based software application that stimulates demand
for business services. GFA works to increase intermediary institutions' outreach to small and medium enterprises by providing technical advice and training according to best practices. GFA's "C³ - Creation of Competence for Competition" package delivers commercially viable state-of-the-art training to local SME promotion organisations and business services providers.

The quality of labour is a prerequisite for the creation of regional competitiveness.GFA's approach includes analysis of the labour market and forecasts capacity building for VET institutions in order to react better to the needs of the private sector.

GFA combines different private sector development approaches, instruments and tools so as to foster local economic development in geographically isolated or administratively confined regions. As a rule, consultation with and participation of target groups in the development process helps create ownership. To adequately cope with this challenge, GFA consultants are trained in participatory planning and modern concepts of organisational development.
