Certification of Forest Management (FM)

GFA Certification carries out forest certifications on a world-wide basis. In the context of a company visit (audit), an evaluation of the 10 FSC Principles involves the review of information including the following: timber inventory data, long-term timber management plans, wildlife surveys, business management plans and employee records.

The FSC certification system is based on an evaluation approach that takes place on a company individual level. In the FSC system each forest company is inspected by the certifier at least on an annual basis, as opposed to regional certification procedures. In order to also provide smaller companies (around <1.000 ha) with the possibility of a cost-effective certification, the instrument of group certification has been developed.

A further possibility for forest companies <100 ha is the „SLIMF“- Individual or group certification (Small and Low Intensity Managed Forests).

The following main advantages for the forest enterprise result from the FSC certification:

  • Opening of new markets
  • Safeguarding of existing market shares and customers
  • Enhanced sales that are dependant on the assortments
  • Documentation of internationally recognised ecological and social standards
  • Improvement of the company’s image and marketing advantages
  • Lead start for the future

If a national standard is recognised by the FSC, then GFA Consulting Group certifies the companies in the respective countries according to these guidelines. In regions where there are no national standards GFA uses its own international accepted standard. This "Accredited GFA Generic Standard" can be viewed here:
