Certification of Chain-of-Custody (COC)

Product chain certification (Chain of Custody, COC) entails a complete inspection of the entire production and trading chain of wood and wood products, starting with the certified forest company and ending with sales to the end consumers.

In doing so each and every element of the chain must be able to provide evidence of a company individual certification, as far as it is the lawful owner of the certified products. Only companies that have their own FSC certificate are allowed to label and sell FSC certified wood. The COC certification therefore garuantees that wood products labelled with the FSC Logo also originate from certified forests.

In general, the following advantages result from the FSC certification for the company:

  • Opening of new markets
  • Safeguarding of existing market shares and customers
  • Improvement of customer relations
  • Improvement of the company’s image and marketing advantages
  • Stand out against competitors
  • Head start for the future

A COC evaluation mostly entails a main audit and an annual surveillance audit.

FSC / PEFC CoC Combined Certification

In collaboration with various organizations GFA offers a Combined FSC / PEFC CoC Certification.

In summary this entails:

  • 2 certification contracts
  • 1 Auditor
  • 1 annual visit
  • 2 reports
  • 2 certificates

The advantages of the combined certification are savings in administration, time and costs in comparison to two individual certifications.
The procedure of a combined COC certification differs only to a small extend to the individual FSC COC Certification (see the link above: "Procedure of certification COC").
