Enhancing the management of migration challenges in Niger

As of July 2017, GFA Consulting Group has been implementing some of the regional and community-level capacity development components of a program that aims at enhancing the management of migration challenges in Niger. The program is co-financed by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the European Union’s Emergency Trust Fund for Africa (EUTF), and is implemented in cooperation with GIZ. Until 2019, it will strengthen the capacities of Nigerien communities and regions along one of the major African migration routes, and help national actors to better understand and respond to the impacts which migration has on local development.

In this context, 12 selected communities and the regional councils of Tahoua, Zinder and Agadez are trained to analyze the specific effects of various migration phenomena on local development. As a result, these government bodies will formulate and prioritize needs-based development and infrastructure measures such as the expansion of schools and health centers. While GIZ remains in charge of the infrastructure component, GFA contributes continuous support to local authorities in order to help them implement other development measures that have previously been identified and adopted. Targeted trainings, counseling, individual and post-training coaching will be part of the assistance provided.
