SDC, 2013 - 2016
Contract value: 1,298,362 CHF

The Green Gold program aimed at promoting collective actions for sustainable rangeland management and improving herders’ access to markets and know-how. GFA was responsible for Component 4, i.e. the facilitation of market access by linking yak and camel herders to processing companies. The primary beneficiaries of the project were about 25,000 herders in Western Mongolia, about 25 processors and various facilitators in the market system.

The important feature of the project was the comprehensive mandate for support of the entire value chain from nomadic herders to the international market. The project mainly worked with various methods of value chain development: Demand and supply analyses; qualification of value chain actors, incl. cooperatives, NGOs, SMEs, processing firms, exporters; the introduction of more productive collection techniques; matchmaking; the presence at exhibitions and fairs; the introduction of improved processing techniques and product designs; the introduction of new value chain financing schemes.
