Improve maternal health care and HIV-related services, phase II

Tanzania
KfW, 2016 - 2019
Contract value: 1,678,189 EUR

The program aims at reducing maternal and neonatal mortality by means of providing poor pregnant women with a full health insurance cover from the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) from their first ante-natal care check for up to six months after delivery.
At the same time, the Project pays enrolment fees of decentralized Community Health Funds (CHF) for the family members of the main beneficiary. CHFs provide a basic benefits package which allows accessing primary care services.

Against the backdrop of Tanzanias move towards universal health coverage (UHC), a secondary objective of the demand-side financing project is to familiarize health providers with claims processes; to enable them to prevent stock outs by utilizing additional income generated through project beneficiaries, and to improve quality of care in general. Strengthening NHIFs internal systems, including IT, is another aim of the project.
