The 5th phase of the Sustainable Land Management Programme project“Sustainable Land Management Programme V (SLM V): Integrated Catchment Restoration of Lake Chamo Basin”, financed by the German Financial Cooperation and implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Ethiopia, intends to reduce land degradation of the Lake Chamo Basin through sustainable land management and restoration measures in the basin area, thereby increasing livelihood- and food security of small farm households. The project area comprises 10 identified Woredas/special Woredas covering the entire catchment of Lake Chamo (Chamo Basin). It consists of four components: 

  1. Green Infrastructure and Resilient Livelihoods
  2. Strengthening and Investing in Cooperatives and Information for Resilience
  3. Rural Land Administration and Use
  4. Project Management and Reporting

The main objectives of the project are reducing land degradation on selected agricultural land and increase the agricultural productivity of small holder farms, with the aim of improving the livelihoods, food security and economic wellbeing of rural households in the project intervention area. The project follows a watershed management approach and builds on pariticpatory land use planning. Measures include restoring degraded land, promoting sustainable agricultural practices, supporting sustainable land management, and increasing the resilience of rural households to climate change.

Job description

The national agriculture and livelihood expert will be responsible for the implementation of activities in climate smart agriculture (CSA) and livelihood diversification and value chain development at woreda and kebele level, including community based organisations. The expert will also be tasked to coordinate activities in regards to participatory land use planning in liaison with TC/GIZ. The expert will also closely liaise with any other land use related project and programmes being implemented in the Lake Chamo Basin, in particular the TC/GIZ programmes. The expert will work under the overall guidance and coordination of the CTA and the int. Advisor for Agriculture, Livelihoods and Value Chain Development and will be assigned the following main tasks, in particular:

  1. identify, plan and implement climate smart agricultural activities as well as livelihood diversification and value chain development activities;
  2. coordinate activities in regards to participatory land use planning in liaison with other land use related projects, programmes and development partners
  3. support and build capacity at the level of woreda and kebele administrations and community based organisations to promote sustainable land use activities and develop value chains to diversify livelihoods;
  4. provide for knowledge management and transfer of best practice examples in sustainable land use and value chain development in the Lake Chamo basin;
  5. keep regular contact with other land management related projects and programmes in the region to identify synergies, raise effectiveness and avoid duplication.


  • Education/training: MSc level degree in agriculture, rural development, agricultural extension, natural resource management, agricultural economics or comparable discipline;
  • Language: C1 proficiency level in English, C1 proficiency level in Amharic;
  • Regional experience: Ideally from the region Arba Minch; Ideally speaks local language
  • General professional experience: a desired professional experience of 10 years or more, working in similar land management programmes.
  • Specific professional experience: The expert should bring experience from other innovative agricultural development and land management programmes as well as experience with entrepreneurial skills in rural areas. Good communication and training skills including the knowledge of the respective regional language are also essential.
