275x200 Upon invitation of the Federation of Municipalities of Donnieh in North Lebanon, European Union Ambassador, Ms Angelina Eichhorst, visited projects funded by the European Union and implemented by the ADELNORD project on 6 Nov, 2013. Since 2010, technical assistance for this project has been provided by GFA and ELARD. The project has three components: development and rehabilitation of agricultural infrastructure such as irrigation canals, agriculture roads and small lakes for irrigation water storage, community development, and supporting the protection of natural resources.

The ambassador’s delegation paid a visit to rehabilitation works of an irrigated area in Mrebbine in the mountain area of Donnieh which is approaching completion. Around ten kilometers of canals were rehabilitated to serve the irrigated plots covering approximately 280 hectares. The beneficiaries of these efforts welcomed the ambassador with a folklore reception, expressing their gratitude to the European Union for its support to this remote and impoverished region. The visit revealed the conditions of life in this mountain community and provided an opportunity to exchange ideas with the locals.

The ambassador met with elected representatives of the region in Sir el Donnieh for a frank and fruitful exchange on development needs. Her speech focussed on the importance of territorial planning and good environmental governance. The president of the Federation of Donnieh Municipalities, M Mohamed Saadieh, presented development efforts in the region and outlined urgently needed support to additional projects.

The Donnieh region seized the opportunity to decorate the Ambassador Ms. Angelina Eichhorst as well some members of the delegation, the CDR and the team leader of the technical assistance, M Christian Rake for their support to the region.
