Access for poor pregnant women to health care and HIV-related services, phase I

Tanzania
KfW, 2010 - 2016
Contract value: 2,334,836 EUR

In cooperation with the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF), poor pregnant women, living in Tanga and Mbeya, receive a free NHIF health insurance from the first point of contact until 6 months after delivery. The families of the women receive a 12-month health insurance at the Community Health Fund (CHF). The project provided the reimbursement of the target group’s pregnancy and non-pregnancy related claims to the health facilities in order to improve the quality of health services provided. Consequently, the facilities had more money to purchase drugs and medical equipment to the benefit of the target group. GFA experts developed innovative approaches to improve the registration of poor pregnant women at the health insurance. In collaboration with a local organization, mobile phone enrollment was introduced as a pilot and is ready to be rolled out.
