Capacity building in the energy sector of Belize

The objectives of this technical assistance assignment are to increase and improve access to modern, affordable and sustainable energy services for the entire population of the country, with widespread benefits, including for the poor in rural areas. The objectives of this contract are as follows:

  • support the Energy Division of the Ministry of Public Utilities, Energy and Logistics (formerly the Ministry of Public Service, Energy and Public Utilities) to strengthen its technical and institutional capacities.
  • advise and assist the Energy Unit and the power utility, Belize Electricity Limited (BEL), in designing, implementing and monitoring the operation of mini-grid and off-grid systems for rural electrification.

Within the project the team identify potential renewable energy sources in Belize and prepare terms of reference for two feasibility studies (for grid-connected power generation). The overall outcome of this project is to strengthen the strategic energy planning process and institutional implementation capacity in Belize.
