KfW, 2017 - 2026
Contract value: 3,040,950 EUR

The Youth and Safe Spaces Programme encourages young people to play an active role in revitalising and sustainably using public spaces in selected communities in El Salvador. By fostering peaceful coexistence and enhancing the social, political and economic integration of young people, the programme aims to reduce violence and strengthen community ties in marginalised areas. To achieve this, social infrastructure such as community centres, sports facilities and parks is built with the active participation of the communities in planning and maintenance.

The programme targets young people aged 14 to 25 in high-violence communities and adopts an inclusive approach, involving children, adolescents and parents in activities such as sports, recreation and conflict mediation. Broader community members, particularly women and mothers, will also benefit from the improved public spaces and safer environments that result. The programme is implemented in coordination with the Ministry of Justice and Public Security (MJSP), the Directorate of Municipal Works (DOM), and local municipalities and communities, ensuring a collaborative and locally driven approach.
