Development of the Urban Water and Sanitation Sector
Large parts of the water supply and sanitation infrastructure in South Sudan either do not function properly or got destroyed during the decades of conflict and civil war. Many towns still lack both the institutional structure and any functioning infrastructure required to provide sustainable water supply and sanitation service of acceptable quality for their population.
Since 2009 GIZ has supported institutional and capacity development in the South Sudanese water sector in technical, administrative as well as in management aspects through the “Development of the Urban Water and Sanitation (Sub-)Sector“ (DUWSS) program.
This phase of the DUWSS programme covered five areas of intervention:
- Water sector reform
- Regulation of the water sector
- Coordination and planning
- Water utilities in selected towns
- Hygiene behaviour
