Increasing agricultural productivity through innovation – agrifinance over leasing
GFA promoted agricultural mechanization through hire-purchase leasing as an innovative agricultural finance product. The project accelerated the importation of durable and appropriate agricultural machinery and equipment to support the Development Bank of Ethiopia (DBE) in building the internal capacity needed to offer leasing finance for agricultural machinery to agribusinesses in a sustainable manner. This should contribute to improving sustainable access to leasing as a new financial product for agricultural SMEs to finance agricultural machinery and equipment. The BMZ provided funding to DBE through KfW, while potential lessees applied to DBE. Eligible lessees were farmers and agricultural service providers, cooperatives or youth groups. GFA supported DBE in strengthening its agricultural leasing financial offer and service delivery, as well as strengthening capacity on the demand and supply side for improved access to quality machinery in Ethiopia.
