Programme for the Sustainable Management of Natural Resources - PSMNR Phase V und VI
The objective of PSMNR Phases IV and V is to manage protected areas and their surrounding landscapes in an integrated manner in order to enhance biodiversity conservation and improve the livelihoods of forest-dependent communities in the South-West Region (SWR) of Cameroon. The intervention area comprises Mount Cameroon National Park, Korup National Park, Takamanda National Park, Bakossi National Park, Banyang Mbo Wildlife Sanctuary, and their surrounding forest landscapes (e.g. forest concessions, council forests and forest reserves), which fulfil important corridor functions for wildlife migration between the protected areas. Through the projects comprehensive collaborative management approach, local communities living in villages adjacent to the protected areas form an integral part of the intervention area.
The programme aims to achieve this objective through:
- the sustainable management and valorisation of forest resources (including council forests, community forests and forest reserves), as well as forest landscape restoration;
- enhanced integrated landscape management (including the further strengthening of multi-stakeholder fora) to improve connectivity between protected areas and promote transboundary landscape management through the biosphere reserve process;
- the consolidation and expansion of the collaborative management approach, including Conservation Development Agreements with local communities, and the promotion of ecotourism in protected areas;
- strengthened law enforcement and improved park management operations within the protected areas; and
- the development and implementation of sustainable financing mechanisms for protected area management.
