GFA PROJECT

Rwandas skills levels and needs for its future pharmaceutical and vaccine manufacturing sector

Rwanda
GIZ, 2022 - 2022
Contract value: 56,420 EUR

The Covid-19 pandemic has illustrated the vulnerability of African countries in accessing essential medicines, vaccines, and equipment for disease prevention and control. To reduce the dependency on global supply, some African countries are determined to build up pharmaceutical production capacities. Rwanda is one of the countries that aims to establish a robust pharmaceutical industry, including vaccine production. The German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) commissioned GIZ to undertake a study to determine Rwanda’s professional skills and academic and vocational training needs for its future pharmaceutical and vaccine manufacturing sector. This analysis provides guidance for investment in the Rwandan pharmaceutical industry, and insight into the higher education system in Rwanda and the East African community. It also sets out tangible recommendations for building a solid educational portfolio to address gaps in specialized pharmaceutical production training.
