Smallholder afforestation Hunan II
The Hunan II project successfully promoted over 36.000 ha of forest establishment, management and protection spatially and institutionally linked to national forest protection and afforestation programs. Through this large and sustainable forest landscapes could be developed and effective tools and methods piloted and transferred into provincial and national efforts and programs. The project established 9,000 ha of forest by afforestation and supported the natural regeneration of more than 10,000 ha through strict protection of mountainous areas. From 2009, the project further introduced Sustainable Forest Management systems on 17.858 ha of existing forests. Participatory Land Use Planning as well as stable land use rights were promoted by the project, as they were the precondition for the project implementation.
