Water Supply and Sanitation for Refugee Settlements and Host Communities in Northern Uganda (WatSSUP)

Uganda
GIZ, 2019 - 2024
Contract value: 5,348,932 EUR

Uganda is the country with the highest number of refugees in Africa. Almost 1.5 million people live in the refugee settlements in the north and southwest. The Ugandan state has regulated the reception of refugees and the development-oriented refugee policy in a special law (Refugee Act) which is regarded as a good practice. Within the refugee settlements in the north, universal access to basic drinking water supply cannot yet be ensured. Thus, the objective of the intervention has been formulated as follows: In selected refugee hosting areas measures to sustain water supply and sanitation services have been implemented in line with national and international refugee strategies. Project activities are clustered in five output areas as follows:

  • Strengthening of the coordination capacity of MWE (under GIZ)
  • Strengthening the capacities of regional structure of Ministry of Water and Environment
  • Improvement of services at district-level
  • Utilization of the potential of local actors
  • Improvement of hygiene conditions, sanitation provision and water source protection in refugee settlements and host communities
