Sustainable Urban Development Forum 2009

Challenges in the Wastewater and Waste Sector in Vietnam is the title of the Sustainable Urban Development Forum 2009 that will be held on February 26 and 27, 2009 at the Horison Hotel in Hanoi.

Bringing together the expertise from Vietnam, other Asian countries and Germany, this Forum is the opportunity for exchange of experience and discussion of possible solutions for improvements in the sector of wastewater and waste management in Vietnam. In this way, the Forum contributes to the efforts of Vietnamese government to intensify and accelerate its engagement in improving living conditions for the urban population through sustainable urban wastewater and waste management systems which are crucial for achieving the Millennium Development Goal "Ensure Environmental Sustainability" (MDG 7) in Vietnam. Based on a better understanding of the structural constraints which hamper improvements in the field of urban wastewater and waste management and which enlarge the existing backlog, the Forum aims at identifying priorities for action and international support.

The Sustainable Urban Development Forum brings together decision makers from relevant ministries in Vietnam and their affiliated agencies as well as representatives from People's Committees and water utility companies from those provinces German Development Cooperation is focusing on the wastewater and waste management sector. To enrich the discussion, international resource persons from German as well as from Asia and other bilateral and international donor organizations also active in the respective sectors in Vietnam will be invited to attend the Forum.
