Agency for Real Estate Cadastre (AREC) and the Ministry of Environment and Spatial Planning (MESP) from Macedonia proposed concept for mash-up application that won in the Ideas competition and will be implemented. The application should provide information mainly to the citizens of Skopje Valley, but also to other interested audience, about existing pollutants and the level of pollution.
The aim of Ideas competition was to raise awareness for Spatial Data Infrastructure in the Western Balkan's region, by collecting citizens' ideas for spatial mash up applications. INSPIRATION consortium consisted of experienced experts from GFA Consulting, Con Terra (Germany), Umweltbundesamt (Austria) and GDi GISDATA (Croatia) had difficult task to choose among ten very innovative, creative and quality proposals from Macedonia, Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Albania. The ideas for mash up apps varied covering different topics such as environmental protection, better system for car parking, control of fire, weather forecast map, interactive city guide etc.
Applications were evaluated through three criteria - the innovation, the technical feasibility and the expected impact on stakeholder and society. International selection committee choose application "To Protect the Environment", from Macedonia because:
"The winning idea that aims at building a bridge between environmental data and spatial maps is a perfect example for a mashup which combines data from different sources in order to create new information for citizen and stakeholder. It enables environmental data which weren't accessible easily until now to be shown on a online map and it empowers the citizen of the pilot region to take more informed decisions about their behavior and the state of environment."
Winning mash up application will provide information about existing pollutants, the level of pollution and will raise awareness about how one can protect nature, to influence the reduction of pollution, primarily in the Skopje Valley. Application aims to connect data by the Ministry of Environment and Spatial Planning and Agency for Real Estate Cadastre (AREC) such as - environment, level of contamination of air, water and soil, spatial location, flora and fauna, endemic species, the way of land use, hydrographical network - through the joint portal of AREC. Application will significantly contribute in decisions making related to: management and disposal of waste, management and water treatment, air pollution in different parts of the Skopje region, and contamination of soil which has a direct impact on the quality of agricultural products.
