Broad-based artificial intelligence capacity building

Kenya
GIZ, 2022 - 2024

The GIZ initiative FAIR Forward - Artificial Intelligence (AI) for All aims to promote an open, inclusive and sustainable approach to AI at an international level. The project Implementation of broad-based AI capacity building in Kenya, implemented in cooperation with Strathmore University, is part of this initiative. It seeks to improve the conditions for the development of artificial intelligence in Kenya through technical training and capacity building.

GFA has supported the curriculum development and delivery of several trainings, including:

  1. 18-hour blended AI primer trainings for government and non-government policymakers in partnership with GIZ DTC and FAIR Forward
  2. Dedicated presence-based training modules on sector-specific and cross-cutting topics, such as AI in agriculture, AI in energy, AI in the justice system, AI in FinTech, with an average of 12 learning hours per module.
  3. An online, self-paced training program on how to use machine learning (ML), deep learning (DL), and natural language processing (NLP) for sustainable development, targeting entrepreneurs and non-governmental organization staff.

By mid-2023, 76 participants had been trained. GFA used the following key steps in this critical process to ensure the relevance and quality of the trainings:

  • identification of stakeholders, their required competencies and challenges,
  • definition of target groups for capacity development (demand and supply),
  • assessment of training needs,
  • definition of key competencies to be developed during the training, and
  • establishment of criteria for successful participation, monitoring and evaluation.
