Rio Magdalena Forestry Program, Phase III

Colombia
KfW, 2011 - 2018
Contract value: 738,855 EUR

The focus of the Rio Magdalena Forestry Program, phase III was on "forestry as a production alternative in the marginal zone of the Coffee Region and biodiversity component. The objective was to promote civil structures, to create jobs and stabilize the income of beneficiaries, and to improve the management of biodiversity. The target group consisted of coffee farmers in the Colombian Andes. Through a system of financial incentives that the program conceived, the establishment of agroforestry and coffee plantations as well as silviculture measures to protect natural forests on farms of small and medium landowners were promoted. The biodiversity component constructed biological corridors in small watersheds that connected protected areas in the upper part with the agricultural areas below, by applying financial incentives for creating landscape elements like mini-corridors in pastures, reforestation, agroforestry and protection of native forest remnants.
