Regional Expert
Project description
The International Climate Initiative (IKI) project aims to promote environmentally and socially responsible, inclusive, and low-carbon value chains for energy transition minerals in the SADC region. Working at the regional level in Southern Africa, the project will promote systems and policies focused on climate and the environment. It will engage with civil society and traditional leaders, and promote new, higher-value industries linked to the mining sector that create sustainable jobs and generate profits and revenues for African businesses and governments. The project will be implemented in six countries over the next five years by the following partners: UNECA, AMDC, Wits University, BGR, Projekt-Consult, and WWF. Within this framework, Projekt-Consult supports the strengthening of environmental monitoring within oversight bodies in the mining sector, with a primary focus on the Copperbelt of Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia. The activities include assessing environmental impacts and monitoring systems, developing practical manuals and guidance, building the capacity of oversight authorities, and piloting digital tools to improve environmental monitoring, reporting, and inspection processes. Through these interventions, the project contributes to improved environmental performance of mining operations and more effective institutional oversight aligned with international best practices.
