APPLYING NATURE-BASED SOLUTIONS – CHALLENGES BEING MET WITH LESSONS LEARNT FROM THE DRC’S FCPF REDD+ PROGRAM

Posted on 27 Jan, 2021 by Martin Burian and Joachim Schnurr

Together with the REDD+ Focal Point of the Government of DRC and WWF DRC, GFA discusses various lessons learnt from the DRC’s REDD+ program. As a frontrunner, the program was the first to be accepted by the Forest Carbon Partner Ship Facility, (FCPF), in 2013. It envisages a total funding volume of 135 million USD of payments, to be disbursed through so-called proxy payments to local communities, for emission reductions. However this program is not yet fully operational. An article in the recent Carbon Mechanisms Review discusses this program’s experiences and the accompanying lessons learnt with respect to baseline setting and the development of the financing strategy.

Please read the article about this project, written by Martin Burian and Joachim Schnurr from GFA Climate Competence Center - together with their colleagues at the REDD Focal Point and WWF in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, on page 34 ff within the recent Carbon Mechanisms Review 04/2020.
