GFA LAUNCHES GIZ PROJECT CLIMATE-RESILIENT WATER SECTOR IN GRENADA (G-CREWS)

Grenada, a beautiful island country situated in the Eastern Caribbean Sea, is facing two serious risks: scarcity of freshwater and recurring natural disasters such as hurricanes and floods.

GFA is providing consultancy services in water resources management and water utility management with an objective to address these risks in order to help improve the climate resilience of Grenada’s water sector. In specific, the team is supporting the establishment of a Water Resources Management Unit (WRMU), which will ensure a sound regulation of water resources in Grenada that is also climate-responsive. Furthermore, small-scale farmers will be trained for installing water-efficient irrigation technology whereas a contingency plan will be developed for responding to natural disasters.

Finally, the Grenadian National Water and Sewerage Authority (NAWASA) will be trained and supported in methods to reduce water losses along with implementing micro-turbines to generate renewable energy in NAWASA’s drinking water supply system.The project is jointly carried out by two GFA departments: Agriculture & Rural Development (ARD) and Water, Sanitation & Waste Management (WSWM), and by Águas de Portugal Internacional as a consortium partner. The project will run until November 2025.
