GFA NEWSLETTER - TACKLING NATURE CONSERVATION, SOCIAL EMPOWERMENT AND CLIMATE PROTECTION TOGETHER

Posted on 19 Dec, 2024 by Anja Desai

The recent COP16 in Colombia on the Convention on Biological Diversity was a disappointment as state representatives were unwilling to agree on future financing of species protection and the monitoring of global progress in this field.

GFA, however, is not discouraged by this bad news. Instead, the company’s Natural Resource Management and Environment Department showcases motivating initiatives in this newsletter that clearly prove how successful project work in this field can be achieved.

In Gunung Leuser National Park in Indonesia, a GFA team addressed dangerous activities such as illegal logging and the extension oil palm plantations bordering this unique ecosystem. A valuable habitat of the Bossematie elephant population in the Côte d'Ivoire could be preserved due to GFA restoration efforts in the previously heavily logged forest area. GFA experts in the Prespa Ohrid National Park between Albania, Greece and North Macedonia improve the living conditions of the local population while safeguarding natural diversity at the same time. In a similar way, indigenous people and small farmers living in the Brazilian state of Acre benefitted from GFA protecting more than seven million hectares of rainforest.

All these examples demonstrate how nature conservation and social empowerment can successfully go hand in hand. This gives reason for optimism. Together with partners and clients, GFA is ready to counterbalance the slow international action on Biodiversity.
