HELPING THE POOR GET THROUGH THE CORONA CRISIS IN MOROCCO

Posted on 9 Jun, 2020 by Daniel Lafond

Due to the Covid-19 crisis, this year’s Ramadan traditional family gatherings were very limited in most Muslims countries. The crisis affects the poorest population strata even stronger, especially in rural areas. This is also the case in Midelt, Morocco, where GFA is implementing the Promotion of Sustainable Energy and Energy Efficiency in the Provinces of Midelt and Tata (EDMITA) project on behalf of GIZ. In order to show solidarity and offer support, GIZ in cooperation with Siemens Gamesa and the local association Amis des Écoles has distributed up to 1,250 food packages for poor families in the Midelt region. GFA works together with Amis des Écoles on the rehabilitation of classrooms in Midelt and Tata in accordance with the Moroccan energy efficiency standard for buildings.

In addition to the food packages, 100,000 masks – 50 masks per family – have been delivered. The families were selected by the prefecture and the Caïd as a traditional leader. GFA project staff working as office assistant and driver for the EDMITA project have volunteered to support the distribution of goods during the ten-day campaign.
