"LAIT UP BELIZE!" AWARDED AS Best Clean Energy Policy Programme

Posted on 16 May, 2025 by Ulrich Theuerkauf

The LAIT UP BELIZE! project reflects a holistic reframing of the energy services sector in Belize – with an updated National Energy Policy 2023 and new draft Energy Legislation – coupled with integrated electrification planning to deliver Universal Access to Electricity in Belize by 2030 while delivering new connections from line extension and new mini-grids to five unserved villages.

The project brings together the key stakeholders in the energy services sector in Belize to deliver outputs and outcomes in pursuit of common development objectives in terms of the NEP 2030.  The project supports energy management (including energy efficiency), EE appliance labelling aligned with the regional program under CROSQ, integrated and geo-spatial electricity planning (with grid, mini-grid and stand-alone solutions) and implementation of mini-grid schemes in traditional Mayan communities in terms of the Free, Prior and Informed Consent protocol to protect indigenous peoples’ rights.

Aspects of the LAIT UP BELIZE! project are firsts in the region, including: An updated National Energy Policy (after ten years); integrated national electrification planning for Universal Access to electricity; clean cooking with electricity and insulated cookers; application of the FPIC protocol in delivering new electricity infrastructure in the context of communal land ownership and the rights of indigenous people.

The project was funded by the European Union and implemented over the period November 2020 - April 2025 by a consortium led by GFA Consulting Group GmbH.
