Market for local fruits and cereals in Senegal

Posted on 13 May, 2019 by Günter Diewald, Team Leader

GFA experts have shared innovative food processing techniques with 50 young women in cooperation with the local vocational training center in Mbacké near Touba, about 160 km east of Dakar. Since January 2019, GFA is responsible for the education and qualification component of the GIZ Réussir au Sénégal project. Local cereals as well as fruits and vegetables have been processed taking high hygiene and quality standards and the sustainability of operational procedures into consideration.

Flour, jam, juices and other products have been manufactured without using any machines. This has allowed for a high quality, and the young Senegalese could apply their newly gained skills for immediately income generation.

The need for quality products in the very hot and dry region around Touba seems to be high. The products resulting from the young women's training were sold out within minutes.
Réussir au Sénégal is an initiative implemented by GIZ on behalf of BMZ that aims at creating prospects for young Senegalese, including returnee migrants.
