STRENGTHENING TRUST, INTEGRITY AND COMPLIANCE IN AND BETWEEN SMES AND PUBLIC SECTOR IN MOLDOVA (STIC)

Posted on 16 Dec, 2024 by Sofia Saeed

GFA Consulting Group is proud to partner with SDC on an initiative that aims to contribute to changing social norms, reducing corruption in both public and private sector, enhancing trust and promoting incentives to move out of shadow and black economy in the agri-food and construction sectors in Moldova.

The private sector in Moldova is highly dominated by small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs), which account for close to 98% of private sector entities. These SMEs are often vulnerable to corruption particularly because of the inordinately complicated and burdensome regulations in the country. This so-called “red tape” creates multiple opportunities for corruption because complying with legal requirements is expensive and time consuming. As a result, a large number of SMEs operate in the informal economy. Our work aims to address overcoming these barriers through tailored technical expertise, and spearheading real change processes. The project specifically focuses on the construction and argi-business sectors.

Here’s what our team works on:

  • Supporting SMEs and public stakeholders in the agri-food and construction sectors to implement simplified integrity and compliance mechanisms. This will include enhancing compliance of private companies with simplified legal requirements as well as promoting the integrity of the public sector.
  • Capacitate public anti-corruption, integrity and enforcement agencies to act with increased political independence, implement their mandate with ethics and integrity and ensure their effective oversight function. Measures will include empowering the middle management, improving incentives to strengthen a business-friendly environment, and improving the accessibility of rules and regulations to the private sector.

We are thrilled to embark on this journey together with SDC and our partners in the public and private sectors to create an impact in Moldova and the wider EU Eastern Partnership region. Stay tuned for updates as we bring this vision to life.
