BELIZE: FIVE WOMEN IN RENEWABLE ENERGY (WIRE) AWARDED
On April 17, 2023, the Belize Ministry of Energy recognized five Women in Renewable Energy (WIRE) who have significantly contributed to the sustainable energy transition in Belize. The European Union supported the award through a GFA project titled, LAIT UP BELIZE! In addition to recognizing the recipients' contributions, the event aimed to launch the vision for a prospective chapter of WIRE in Belize.
Currently, four Belizean women are enrolled in the Women in Renewable Energy international association of the Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) in the USA. During the WIRE event, eleven women in energy and related fields were inspired to work toward making the vision a reality. An association in Belize will provide more opportunities for local women in the energy sector, for networking, capacity building, mentoring, and more. RMI also participated in the launch and offered further support at the Caribbean Renewable Energy Forum (CREF2023), during which four Belizean women were invited to the WIRE side event to take place on Wednesday, 26 April, 2023.
The LAIT UP BELIZE! project anticipates ongoing support for the WIRE initiative in Belize, and the establishment of a WIRE chapter to increase opportunities for women in the energy services sector, and the associated energy transition in Belize.
