"YOUR ACTIONS ARE OF GREATER IMPORTANCE" - AN ENVIRONMENTAL COMMUNICATION CAMPAIGN

Posted on 4 Feb, 2019 by Franziska Helbig

On January 24, 2019, the Ministry of Information Policy together with the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources and the EU project Association4U launched the communication campaign "Your actions are of greater importance”. The country's environmental policy can be effectively implemented only if it involves every citizen. Therefore, the communication campaign in support of the updated Environmental Strategy until 2030 aims at raising Ukrainians’ awareness on how the state of the environment is affected by people’s daily habits. "The updated 2030 Environmental Strategy, which is to be approved by the Ukrainian Parliament, determines a long-term vision of environmental protection policy and contains key indicators of its effective implementation. However, without changing the attitude of the public towards environmental problems, without understanding their causes, the strategy may remain only on paper and not achieve its goals. Social videos, taken together with the Ministry of Information Policy, aim to show each Ukrainian a link between habitual actions and the state of the environment," noted Natalia Trofymenko, Acting Director of the Department of Strategy and European Integration of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Ukraine.

Liudmyla Vasylenko, Head of the European Integration Sector of the Ministry of Information Policy (MIP) of Ukraine, added: "One of the MIP’s priorities is to promote European values, and clean environment is among them. The Ministry of Information Policy supported the initiative of the Ministry of Ecology and Association4U and took a series of animated videos showing that the solution of environmental issues is in our daily actions, in a consistent change of old habits to new, more environmentally conscious ones. A lot depends on each of us, and our joint effort will lead to major changes."

Leading Association4U communication expert at the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Ukraine, Viktoriya Yashkina, and senior communication fellow at Association4U, Oleksii Kharchenko, stressed that social advertising is one of the key components of the information campaign for the 2030 Environmental Strategy that the project team helps implement. "The increased standard of environmental consciousness of citizens is an important element of the European vector of Ukraine. Our attitude to the utilization of waste, water, electricity and transport, that’s what shapes Europe in Ukraine. We would like to emphasize the importance of everyday choices: between a plastic or canvas bag, the habit of turning off the faucets or wasteful water use, waste sorting or mountains of rubbish in landfills," added Viktoriya Yashkina. The EU project Support to the Implementation of the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement (or Association4U for short) supports the activities of governmental agencies of Ukraine, mainly the Government Office for European Integration, the Office of the Vice Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration and line ministries involved in the implementation of the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement.
