Implementation of social protection for the ultra-poor
The GIZ project in central Malawi aims to equip intermediaries at the national, district and local levels with tools and capacities to better plan and implement social protection programs. Initially, about 280,000 households benefitted from the project in the districts of Mchinji, Lilongwe, Dedza, Dowa, Salima, Ntchisi, Ntcheu, Balaka, and Mangochi. The GFA team created a certificate-level training course on social protection. A gender-sensitive implementation manual elaborated by the team offers orientation for district councils on how to implement social protection programs and how to train district and extension officers on its use. GFA also developed a harmonized payment mechanism, a data management system, and four integrated applications for a geographic information system (GIS) related to coordination, mobile data collection, data analytics, and payments.
