ARAKET PROJECT TRANSFORMS NEW SETTLEMENTS IN KYRGYZSTAN

Posted on 10 Apr, 2026 by Ai-Tunuk Toktogulova and Thea Güttler

By 2025, the Araket project will have improved living conditions in Kyrgyzstan’s new settlements by strengthening infrastructure, empowering communities and fostering cooperation with local authorities to promote sustainable development.

Across Kyrgyzstan, thousands of families living in new settlements face daily challenges relating to infrastructure, access to services and limited engagement with local authorities. The 'Araket – Improving Living Conditions in New Settlements of Kyrgyzstan' project is changing this reality by supporting seven settlements in Bishkek and four in Osh, helping communities to build more resilient and inclusive environments.

At the heart of Araket lies a simple yet powerful concept: informed and engaged communities can effect sustainable change. Through awareness-raising activities, residents are gaining a better understanding of their rights and responsibilities, as well as the confidence and tools needed to collaborate with local governments. This has led to tangible improvements, including better access to public services and more responsive local decision-making.

As Alex Myhaylov, the team leader of the Araket Project, highlights, “Real change happens when communities are not just beneficiaries, but active partners. Araket shows that when people are empowered and institutions are responsive, lasting impact becomes possible”.
Funded by the Swiss government and implemented by GFA Consulting Group in partnership with local organisations, including the Resource Centre for Elderly People, the Advocacy Centre for Human Rights, Arysh, SheStars and MSDSP KG, the project is making a real difference. By combining international expertise with in-depth local knowledge, the Araket project ensures that its solutions are practical, inclusive and sustainable.
