GFA LAUNCHES CAPACITY BUILDING PROJECT FOR THE AQUACULTURE SECTOR IN CAMBODIA

Posted on 22 Jun, 2021 by Khaled Negm

GFA has launched the Capacity Building for the Aquaculture Sector project on behalf of GIZ as part of the Country Package - Fishing for food security in Cambodia. The project is carried out jointly with AquabioTech Group and Cofrepêche as consortium partners and will run until June 2022.

GFA provides hands-on trainings on technical aspects and business skills for aquaculture farmers and fingerling producers in Kampong Thom to increase production and incomes. Pond construction, feed and water quality, fish stocking, harvesting, as well as marketing and bookkeeping are among the services covered. Since pond aquaculture and community-managed rice field fisheries (“Community Fish Refuges”) have the potential to increase fish production and raise household incomes, the project also helps reduce malnutrition and undernutrition.

Cambodia has experienced consistent economic growth and reduction in poverty over recent years. Nevertheless, the rural population in particular continues to face many challenges such as poverty and malnutrition. The project area Kampong Thom around the Tonle Sap Lake with its extensive floodplains and seasonally flooded rice fields is mainly dependent on fisheries. Overfishing, pollution, climate change and an increasing demand for fish protein are major challenges for the fisheries sector.
