STUDY TOUR PROVIDES PRACTICAL INSIGHTS FOR WASTEWATER TREATMENT IN BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA
A study tour to Germany, held from 23-28 March 2026, was successfully organised for representatives of the Public Utility Company Vodovod i kanalizacija Zenica -ViK (Water and Sewerage Company), with the aim of gaining practical insights into wastewater treatment technologies relevant for the upcoming Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) in Zenica. During the visit, the delegation explored several treatment plants, including Liebenwalde WWTP, Fürstenwalde WWTP, Neuruppin WWTP, and Wansdorf WWTP.
These facilities provided valuable examples of operational practices, maintenance approaches, and technical solutions similar to those planned for Zenica. Particular focus was placed on reed bed systems for sludge management, which were observed across multiple sites. This technology is currently being considered for the Zenica WWTP as a sustainable solution for sludge storage and treatment until a final disposal option is defined. In addition, the visit to Wansdorf WWTP offered useful insights into treatment processes and plant operation comparable to the system planned in Zenica, supporting future operational readiness.
The study tour marked an important step as construction works for the Zenica WWTP are about to begin. The new plant, located along the Bosna River, will have a capacity of 70,000 population equivalents and will meet EU standards, including nutrient removal, with potential for future expansion.
The project “Wastewater Collection and Treatment Zenica” is financed through grants from the German Government (KfW) and the Swiss Government (SECO), with additional support from the City of Zenica. Implementation is led by ViK Zenica, ensuring effective coordination and management of all project activities.
This study tour marks an important step in strengthening local capacities and ensuring the successful implementation and long-term operation of the Zenica WWTP.
