GFA PROJECT

Favorable policy for green hydrogen / PtX production, application and export

South Africa
GIZ, 2021 - 2023
Contract value: 185,044 EUR

In the context of a rapidly decreasing global carbon budget and the urgency to identify adequate solutions for decarbonizing the so-called heavy-to-abate sectors, the demand for green hydrogen (H2) and green hydrogen-based products (power-to-x (PtX) such as ammonia and synthetic jet fuels, is steadily increasing. Within the framework of the German National Hydrogen Strategy, the South African-German Cooperation agreed on launching several initiatives in the field of green hydrogen and Power-to-X in South Africa. The ‘H2.SA’ project (funded by the BMWK/BMZ) under the National Hydrogen Strategy was initiated focusing on supporting South African stakeholders from the public and private sector as well as civil society in setting-up favorable regulatory, institutional and technical framework conditions for a green and sustainable hydrogen economy. GFA´s team implemented the following tasks:

  • Analyzing the renewable H2/PtX value and supply chains for strategic market insights
  • Evaluating competitiveness of renewable H2/PtX applications
  • Quantifying the renewable H2/PtX market potential and value
  • Identifying renewable H2/PtX business opportunities across the whole value chain
  • Strengthening technical capabilities across different sectors
  • Assessing job potential and reskilling need to develop the renewable H2/PtX economy

In order to improve the strategic planning basis and the regulatory framework in the view of a favorable future green hydrogen / PtX policy environment, several activities focused on analysing and improving the existing regulatory framework and strategy documents in South Africa under consideration of international approaches and best practices from other countries (international benchmarking).
