Lower Nzoia Irrigation Project (LNIP), phase I
The World Bank is supporting the Ministry of Water and Irrigation (MOWI) of Kenya in the Improvement of Flood Mitigation Structures (IFMS) on the lower reaches of the Nzoia River and the implementation of the Lower Nzoia Irrigation Project (LNIP) Phase I. The IFMS component includes works for the construction and improvement of embankments. Component 2 (LNIP) focuses on construction works for irrigation and drainage infrastructure as well as agricultural support and value chain development, participatory irrigation management support and project management. Specifically, GFA will support farmers to independently operate and manage the irrigation system to produce and market agricultural products. This includes support for the development and management of demonstration farms in the irrigation area (focusing on rice intensification and high-value crops), establishment of nurseries, capacity building and training of water user associations, farmer groups and the government on irrigation practices and Sustainable Rice Intensification (SRI), development of farmer-market linkages and post-harvest infrastructure, and establishment of an agricultural support fund and irrigation and management facilities.
