Lower Nzoia Irrigation Project (LNIP), phase I
The World Bank supports the Kenyan Ministry of Water and Irrigation (MOWI) with the improvement of flood mitigating structures (IFMS) on the lower reaches of the river Nzoia and the implementation of the Lower Nzoia Irrigation Project (LNIP) phase I. The IFMS component will entail construction work for the building and improvement of dykes. Component 2 (LNIP) focuses on construction work for irrigation and drainage infrastructure as well as agricultural support and value chain development, support with participatory irrigation management and project management. In detail, GFA assists farmers to operate and manage the irrigation system autonomously to grow and market agricultural products. This includes support to the development and management of demonstration farms in the irrigation area (focus on rice intensification and high-value crops), establishment of nurseries, capacity building and training of Water User Associations, Farmer Groups, and government on irrigation practices and Sustainable Rice Intensification (SRI), development of farmer-market linkages and post-harvest infrastructures, as well as setting up an Agricultural Support Fund and irrigation and management facilities.
