Grand Mbam – Integrated and participatory forest management (AGiPaF)
The KfW-funded project Support to Integrated and Participative Forest Management aims to promote the integrated and sustainable management of forest landscapes by local stakeholders. It thereby contributes to the connectivity of high-value forest ecosystems, biodiversity conservation and sustainable local development. The project establishes and strengthens participatory forest management structures at municipal, village and cluster levels. It also formalises Sustainable Management Agreements (SMAs) with local communities to create incentives for the conservation and sustainable use of natural resources while supporting the development of neighbouring communities. These performance-based agreements reward efforts to prevent deforestation and conserve biodiversity, including through the sustainable intensification of agricultural production and agroforestry in agreed production areas. They may also support other rural development priorities identified in local development plans.
The project targets the Grand Mbam landscape, comprising the departments of Mbam-et-Inoubou and Mbam-et-Kim. This critical forest–savannah transition zone includes the Mbam et Djerem and Mpem et Djim national parks. The landscape is organised into strategic clusters covering cocoa-producing areas, national park buffer zones and deforestation fronts.Th
e main intervention areas include the buffer zones of both national parks and the corridor between them, as well as Forest Management Units (FMUs), council forests, community forests, hunting zones (ZICs) and community-managed hunting zones (ZICCs). Establishing a wildlife corridor between the two national parks and strengthening their management are also central components of the project. The project is implemented in close coordination with the CAFI-funded Grand Mbam Integrated Landscape Management Project (PGIP-GM), which is also financed through KfW and implemented in cooperation with MINEPAT. Both projects have the same implementation period and consulting team.
