Safe spaces for coexistence for youth in El Salvador (CONVIVIR)

El Salvador
KfW, 2017 - 2026
Contract value: 3,040,950 EUR

The objective of the program is to promote the active participation of young people in the revitalization and sustainable use of safe spaces in selected communities in priority municipalities. In this way, it aims to contribute to the improvement of peaceful coexistence and the social, political and economic integration of young people in Central America (El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras).

The program targets young men and women between the ages of 14 and 25 who live in marginalized communities with high levels of violence and who are therefore particularly exposed to violence and crime. As the program seeks a highly inclusive approach, children, adolescents and parents are to be involved in the concrete activities of the projects (e.g. sports and leisure activities, complementary conflict mediation measures). The indirect target group are all inhabitants of the participating communities, especially women and mothers, who will benefit from the coexistence and the improvement of public spaces.

The implementation of the program involves: the Ministry of Justice and Public Security (MJSP) as the coordinating entity of the program; the Dirección de Obras Municipales (DOM) as the implementing entity of the program ("EEP"); and the municipalities and communities in their capacity as local implementing entities.
