Cooling Program for Southern Africa
Air Conditioner (ACs) and particularly single split type ACs are responsible for substantial amounts of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions being emitted in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region. This is mainly due to the high inefficiency of the used products, as well as the high emission factor of the regional power system. The project aims to address this issue through the development of dedicated Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) for ACs (Botswana, eSwatini, Namibia) or the improvement of the MEPS where they are already in place but ineffective (South Africa).
Simultaneously, the project aims at developing financing opportunities for private households based on carbon finance under Article 6 (A6) of the Paris Agreement. With targeted services on the political, contractual, regulatory, technological, and economic level, the activities contribute to the overall objective to prepare the framework conditions for an AC replacement programme in Botswana, eSwatini, Namibia and South Africa.
