Support to public financial and economic management

Malawi
GIZ, 2024 - 2027
Contract value: 200,000 EUR

Since 2020, GFA has been working closely with the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) as part of the GIZ programme “Strengthening Public Financial and Economic Management (PFEM)”. The project supports the MRA in improving how it audits transfer pricing — the pricing of transactions between related entities of multinational companies across borders, which can affect the amount of tax paid in each country.

Funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), GFA successfully completed the first two phases of the project and was awarded a third phase in late 2024. The initiative strengthens the skills of MRA auditors, supports improvements to internal systems, and provides technical advice on tax policy and legislation related to transfer pricing.

By contributing to the resolution of pending audit cases and building long-term expertise, the project promotes fairer taxation, enhanced revenue collection, and greater financial transparency in Malawi. It also contributes to the country’s broader public financial management reforms by making the tax system more robust and efficient.
