Transboundary Biosphere Reserve Prespa, phase II

Albania
KfW, 2018 - 2026
Contract value: 2,073,565 EUR

The transboundary Prespa region is a globally recognised biodiversity hotspot. In response to threats to the region’s aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, German Development Cooperation committed to continuously supporting the Albanian government in preserving its natural and cultural values through the project Transboundary Biosphere Reserve Prespa, Phase II. The project’s objectives reflected the understanding that improvements and success in nature conservation and environmental protection could only be achieved by taking into account and actively addressing the socio-economic development dimension in the Prespa region. The project targeted the Prespa National Park and its adjacent communities, as well as, more broadly, the area of the Ohrid-Prespa Transboundary Biosphere Reserve. Against this background, Phase II of the project focused on two interrelated objectives: the conservation of biological diversity and the reduction of pressure on natural resources, alongside poverty reduction and the improvement of the living conditions of the local population.
