Strengthen individual and institutional capacities of health sector service providers relating to emergency obstetric and newborn care (EmONC)

The project aims to enhance the individual and institutional capacities of health sector service providers in emergency obstetric and newborn care (EmONC) across the districts of Kailahun, Kambia, and Pujehun. The activities focus on building the skills of healthcare workers and improving health infrastructure to ensure better service delivery at the Peripheral Health Units level which include Community Health Centres, Community Health Posts and Maternal and Child Health Posts. 

Work Package 1: Strengthening individual capacities of healthcare workers

  • Training 325 healthcare workers in EmONC practices.
  • Mentoring 340 healthcare workers and establishing a sustainable mentoring system in the partner districts.
  • Setting up and institutionalizing three skills labs for hands-on EmONC training.

Work Package 2: Strengthening institutional capacities

  • Equipping health facilities with essential medical equipment for EmONC services.
  • Enhancing quality assurance in EmONC service delivery.
  • Supporting referral systems in each district.
  • Advising District Health Management Teams (DHMTs) on planning and improving EmONC readiness in the districts.

This comprehensive project not only enhances the skills and expertise of healthcare workers but also improves the infrastructure needed to deliver high-quality emergency obstetric and newborn care.
