Training and organizational development to health products regulatory authority
The backbone of local vaccine production is an effective national regulatory authority to ensure the quality and safety of vaccines. GIZ, through its Vaccines for Africa: Roll-out and Production in South Africa (SAVax) project, is supporting the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) to make its operations more effective and efficient. SAHPRAs goal is for South Africa to become the first African country to achieve WHO Maturity Level 4 for both vaccine and drug regulation by 2025. SAHPRA also aims to increase its role in supporting regional and continental regulatory harmonisation. In August 2023, SAHPRA was designated by AUDA-NEPAD as a Regional Centre of Regulatory Excellence (RCORE) for Vaccines Regulatory Oversight for a period of four years in nine key functions.
GFAs technical assistance to SAHPRA under the GIZ SAVax project focuses on two packages of activities: training for key regulatory processes, and support for organisational development. The activities will be carried out in close cooperation with the GIZ project in Pretoria and the partner, SAHPRA.
