Strengthening of health structures in the area of family planning and sexual and reproductive health and rights
The GIZ module was part of the German Development Cooperation program " Promotion of the Health Sector in Burundi - Strengthening Health Structures and Health Financing in Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) and Maternal and Child Health", to which KfW also contributed. Three successive phases have already been implemented between 2013 and June 2021. The objective of this phase was to improve the coverage of quality SRHR services in Mwaro, Muramvya and Gitega provinces. Under the current phase of the module, GIZ implemented various approaches to improve the countrys demographic and health situation. This was done through the continuous strengthening and development of two action areas: Accessibility and quality of SRHR services and cooperation with civil society.
The main target groups of the project were children and adolescents in schools and out-of-school institutions, women of reproductive age between 15 and 49 years, and health workers (SRHR service providers and district health team members). The main partners in the implementation of the activities were the National Reproductive Health Program (Programme National de la Santé de la Reproduction, PNSR) and provincial and district health facilities in the three provinces. Other partners included local NGOs (Service Yezu Mwiza, Nturengaho, FVS and RENAJES) and the Network of Religious Denominations for Health Promotion and AIDS Control.
