Green innovations centers for the agricultural and food sector
The objective of the study was to provide a basis for stakeholders in Malawi to determine whether Aflasafe should be commercialized in Malawi and if yes, how this should be done, given the specific country context, potential demand, willingness to pay and existing manufacturing options. Aflasafe is a biocontrol product developed by the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) that prevents the contamination of maize and groundnuts with aflatoxin by more than 80%. Aflatoxin is a naturally occurring toxin that can cause a weakened immune system in humans and in case of acute exposure liver edema and death. The study aimed at elaborating a commercialization strategy for Aflasafe to enable a large-scale application of the product by Malawian farmers.
