EU and South Africa partners for growth

South Africa
EU, 2018 - 2022
Contract value: 3,499,500 EUR

The project focuses on economic diplomacy action planning, covering (B2B-) partnerships, Market access and enabling environment, innovation and sustainability, and the investment in climate and crosscutting issues. The project has provided extensive support in the area of renewable energy, power fuels, with a systematic focus on hydrogen. More specifically, the project explored the market and scale-up potential to establish South Africa as the key supplier of green hydrogen for the European market, including job creation impact. These activities include:

  • Stocktaking and benchmarking of the regulatory (standards/norms), legal and policy framework conditions and recommendations for necessary adjustments thereof.
  • Assessment of the available Renewable Energy (RE) sources to inform and forecast of generation potentials for green hydrogen (GH2).
  • Market assessment for powerfuels and their applicability in the local economy and local value chains.
  • Use of powerfuels in/for (local) South African industries along the value-chain (for e.g., the quantification of GH2 required to convert the currently mothballed Arcelor Mittal (AMSA) Saldanha Works to green steel (approx. 1 GW of RE).
  • Quantification of the potential and feasibility of a green hydrogen export model for two South African ports. Furthermore, the project explored barriers to South African and EU businesses seizing clean powerfuels.
